Biography

Born in Horitz, Austria-Hungary (now Horice, Czechoslovakia), on November 22, 1849, Mauthner was an author, journalist, theatrical critic, and philosopher, known for his work on the philosophy of language. He moved to Berlin in 1876, to Freiburg im Breisgau in 1900, and died in Meersburg on June 29, 1923.

Scope and content note

This Collection represents the complete literary estate of Fritz Mauthner, as preserved by the Catholic priest, geistlicher Rat Wilhelm Rostle of Meersburg, Germany, who kept it since Mauthner's death in 1923 and donated it to the Leo Baeck Institute in 1966.

Collection contains correspondence with family members, newspapers, publishing houses, translators, and many prominent writers, philosophers, historians, politicians, actors, musicians, and other individuals, including Berthold Auerbach, Ferdinand Avenarius, Julius Bab, Hermann Bahr, Ludwig Bamberger, Gerson von Bleichroeder, Otto Braun, Martin Buber, Alfred Doeblin, Johann Gustav Droysen, Kurt Eisner, Paul Ernst, Ernst Feder, Lion Feuchtwanger, Heinrich Friedjung, Walter Friedlaender, Ludwig Fulda, Edmond de Goncourt, Maximilian Harden, Hermann Hesse, Arno Holz, Siegfried Jacobsohn, Josef Kainz, Karl Kraus, Gustav Landauer, Helen Lange, Lilli Lehmann, Theodor Lessing, Detlev von Liliencron, Paul Lindau, Emil Ludwig, Ernst Mach, Helmut von Moltke, Theodor Mommsen, Rudolf Mosse, Erich Muehsam, Boerries von Muenchausen, Engelbert Pernerstorfer, Josef Popper-Lynkeus, Walther Rathenau, Alexander Roda-Roda, Rene Schickele, Werner von Siemens, Georg Simmel, Helene Stoecker, Hermann Sudermann, Ferdinand Toennies, Frank Wedekind, and Bruno Wille.

Included are also clippings by and about Mauthner; manuscripts of essays, plays, poetry, proofs, offprints and articles by him; diaries and notebooks of Mauthner, including a diary from the first years of World War I; personal and family documents from Horitz, Berlin and Prague; photos and photo albums of Mauthner's friends and of his family, particularly in Horitz.
