Michaelson Family Papers, 1892-2000

Anna Michaelson served as a midwife primarily in the Lower East Side area where she lived. However, her records show that she delivered several babies uptown in Manhattan as well as in Brooklyn and the Bronx. She recorded her births in some 94 booklets whose pages are stubs from which the actual birth certificates were detached. In a few cases, the birth certificates are part of the collection. Whatever information was included in the birth certificate is also included on the stub. Each birth record includes surname and first name of the child, sex, race, date and place (address) of birth, parents names including mother's maiden name, ages and country of birth of the parents, residence, occupation of the father, number of previous births to the mother, and the number still living. Sometimes data is omitted.

In three cases, the actual date of birth was not included on the record itself. However, the Archives was able to determine the date from Anna Michaelson's appointment notes in two of these and we included those dates in the index. In the case of one birth, the surname was omitted, but a search of parents first names and address on other births assisted in identifying the family.

It should be noted that Mrs. Michaelson delivered more than one child in many of these families. The spelling of surnames varied over time. These are not typographical errors. Where the name was not clear, alternate spellings are provided.

The Archives has arranged the booklets numerically and these have been placed in numbered files. Use these file/booklet numbers in ordering records.
