Brooklyn Hebrew Orphan Asylum

Brooklyn Hebrew Orphan Asylum. Records, 1878-1969

The records of the Brooklyn Hebrew Orphan Asylum include admission and discharge records for the years 1879 to 1953. This database indexes names found in ledgers from 1879 to 1928. The ledgers are located in boxes 6,7, and 8 of the collection. The ledgers may include the name, age, and country of birth of the child; the parents' names and birth country, the admission and discharge dates, and remarks regarding to whom or where the child was discharged.

Please note that although the information is generally accurate, birthdates may be approximate. Please be prepared to search over a wide span of dates within the given year to locate the child record. In addition, many orphans returned to the orphanage several times, and may have different addresses and different surnames from a mother's remarriage. City directories may help one locate other relatives. If addresses are available, the borough is often included. Many addresses listed in New York City may actually be located in the Bronx.
